The starting and concluding point of the Ramayana in the Manas is “Ayodhya.” The term Manas means “within the mind” or “the depths of the mind,” and Ayodhya means “a place where there is no possibility of conflict, discord, or unrest—where there is no crime, no punishment for any crime.” Another name for it is Awadh, which signifies “that which cannot be destroyed” or “that in which no division can exist.”However, externally, nothing of this is visible. The profound, inner truth of events cannot be perceived with an outward perspective—one would not find a single truth. For instance, unrest, conflict, and discrimination may seem apparent there. But one who sees with an inner vision perceives only the truth.From a philosophical perspective, the state where the fluctuations of the mind are entirely restrained is Ayodhya, and it is also Awadh. This is a mental state of the seeker, the pinnacle of spiritual practice. This aligns with the definition of yog itself: “Yogah Chitta Vritti Nirodhah” (Yog is the cessation of the fluctuations of the mind).

“Know the self as the rider in the chariot, and the body as the chariot itself. Know the intellect as the charioteer, and the mind as the reins. “This idea is further elucidated in the Bhagavad Gita: “Therefore, O Arjun, first restrain the senses, then destroy this sinful destroyer of knowledge and wisdom.” (Gita 3.41). Lord Krishn advises Arjun to become a “Dasharath”, one who masters the senses. Dasharath is a traveler on the path of yog, and for a yogi, the guidance is clear: “Yog is skill in action.” (Gita 2.50) This requires the essential condition of “equanimity is called yog” (Gita 2.48). A balanced vision, balanced thoughts, and a state of equanimity ensure internal and external harmony and peace. This state is one of true happiness and contentment. Dasharath’s three queens represent the Trigunas (the three fundamental qualities): Kausalya symbolizes Sattva (purity and devotion), Sumitra represents Rajas (activity and wisdom), Kaikeyi embodies Tamas (inertia and action).

In the realm of nature, these are states of intellect. When the mind becomes restrained (Chitta Vritti Nirodha), one transcends the gunas, and their forms transform. Dasharath thus represents the yogic path of mastering the senses and attaining inner equanimity and balance.

The yogi Dasharath attains the fulfillment of Purusharthas (the four goals of life: Dharma, Artha, Kama, and Moksha). Only a yogi, through disciplined practice, can achieve these four objectives in life. The seeker in the form of Dasharath also attained them: Dharma: Represented by Ram, the embodiment of knowledge and righteousness. Artha: Represented by Lakshman, the repository of all attributes and the essence of knowledge. Kama: Represented by Bharat. Moksha: Represented by Shatrughna.

Ram is Dharma: Ram symbolizes Dharma. The word Dharma comes from “धारयति असौ सह धर्मः,” which means that which sustains our existence is Dharma. It is the fundamental principle that upholds our identity, without which we lose ourselves. For humans, this principle is humanity. To live in alignment with humanity is our Dharma.

This human Dharma manifests in our thoughts, beliefs, mind, and behavior; hence it is called Ram. The word Ram signifies “रम्यते इति रामः” — that which pervades and resides within us, in every part of our being. This Ram is our Dharma.

The Many Forms of Ram: Ram exists in various forms, and each is valid based on individual experience: One Ram is the son of Dasharath. Another Ram resides within every being. One Ram is the essence of the entire cosmos. Another Ram is beyond all creation and unique. All these perspectives are true based on one’s realization. Logic and debate have no place here, as each individual experiences Ram differently. A true seeker, driven by curiosity, experiences every link in this chain and understands the interconnectedness of science, spirituality, and existence. Thus, Ram transcends definition, embodying the essence of Dharma as an eternal truth, a guiding principle, and the very soul of existence.

Lakshman represents one whose sole focus and purpose is Ram. One whose only goal is Ram is truly Lakshman. The true significance, utility, and dignity of Artha (wealth) lie in its inseparable connection with Dharma (righteousness). The union of Artha and Dharma is both beneficial and welfare-oriented, bringing prosperity to individuals and society. Dharma achieves its purpose only when accompanied by Artha, but Artha is meaningful and valuable only when it maintains a distance from indulgence, greed, and luxury. Consumption is inevitable, but it should be rooted in renunciation—aligned with the principle of Tena tyaktena bhunjitha (“Enjoy by renunciation”). Lakshman, thus, symbolizes unwavering focus on the goal represented by Ram, never wandering elsewhere. This steadfast dedication to Ram as the ultimate aim is what defines Lakshman.

Bharat symbolizes Bhava (emotions, devotion, and essence). He represents Kama (desire) in its highest and purest form. The word Bharat comes from “भ + रत,” where भ signifies nourishment, sustenance, and enjoyment rooted in knowledge, and रत means being deeply immersed in it. Thus, Bharat is one who is constantly immersed in true knowledge. Bharat transforms desire (Kama) into something noble, admirable, and worthy of reverence. His thoughts, actions, and way of life elevate Kama to a sanctified level, demonstrating how desire, when guided by wisdom and purity, becomes an essential and divine force. Bharat is one who changes the perception of those who view Kama with disdain. He reveals the supreme essence and purpose of Kama as a vital, constructive energy of life. By embodying this principle, Bharat stands as a symbol of profound devotion (Bhava) and the sanctity of all aspects of existence.

Shatrughna embodies the essence of Satsang (association with truth or virtuous company). The scriptures extol the unparalleled glory of Satsang, describing it as the gateway to liberation (Moksha). Desire is omnipresent, and unfulfilled desires give rise to unrest and anger. However, Shatrughna is one who is devoid of all desires. While Lakshman desires only Ram and Bharat’s sole longing is also for Ram, Shatrughna transcends even the desire for Ram. He is a Vitaragi (one free from all attachments), for whom nothing is personal, no one is an enemy, and who harbors no divisions within. Shatrughna symbolizes complete mastery over the mind and emotions, having conquered all inner tendencies. This state represents ultimate liberation (Moksha), the condition of a Jivanmukta (liberated while living). The ideals of Kaivalya (oneness) and Nirvana (freedom) are deeply ingrained in this concept. In this state, one transcends all dualities and reaches what the Bhagavad Gita calls Sthitaprajna—a person of steady wisdom. A Jivanmukta continues to engage in the world’s activities because no one can escape action, but their actions are now Nishkama Karma (desireless actions). Their work becomes Karma Yog, the culmination of the yogic path. This state of being surpasses all categories of Karma (action), Akarma (inaction), and Vikarma (misaction), representing a realm far beyond them. It is the pinnacle of Yog and the ultimate union of action and liberation. This is why the value of Satsang—the foundation of such realization—is incomparable.

The tendencies of a true pursuer (Purusharthi) can degenerate into demonic inclinations (Danavriti) if not guided by higher principles. The ultimate utility and purpose of Purushartha lie in entrusting Dharma (Ram) and Artha (Lakshman) into the capable hands of a deserving and trusted guide, symbolized by Vishwamitra (“a friend of universal trust”). It is the social responsibility of every pursuer of Purushartha to safeguard progressive and developmental initiatives in society. This means protecting creative institutions, research centers, sacrificial grounds, and laboratories (Yagyashalas) from regressive, destructive tendencies. These tendencies are represented by Tadaka (illogical reasoning), Subahu (habitual behavior), and Maricha (impure mind). Only through such protection can society sustain its forward movement and collective welfare.

The Symbolism of the Bow of Shiva: Following this, the Dhanush Yajna (the breaking of Shiva’s bow) takes place. Lord Shiva, the Mahayogi, represents the pinnacle of spiritual practice. In the journey of self-discipline and spiritual progress, every seeker must metaphorically break this bow. However, this act can only be accomplished by a true yogi, one who genuinely embodies the principles of Yog. A deceiver or pretender cannot achieve this feat. The bow of Shiva is called Pinaka, which carries a profound significance. Pinaka is derived from “रम्भः पिनाकमिति दण्डस्य,” where Pinaka refers to the Danda (staff). In the context of yog and spirituality, Pinaka represents the Merudanda (spinal column).

The Merudanda as Pinaka: The Merudanda is the axis of life force (Prana) in the human body and the seat of spiritual energy. To “break the bow of Shiva” means to master the inner discipline required to awaken and balance this energy. Only a genuine seeker, deeply rooted in yogic practices, can achieve this alignment.

Thus, this narrative not only illustrates the societal responsibility of safeguarding righteousness (Dharma) and purpose (Artha) but also emphasizes the personal journey of every spiritual practitioner in transcending obstacles and aligning with the ultimate truth through dedicated practice and self-mastery.

In symbolic terms, the Merudanda represents the bow. Here, Dhyana (meditation) is described as an action (Kriya), for action is the central focus, and hence Dhyana is referred to as the bow. The string of this bow must be drawn from the Muladhara (root chakra) and stretched to the Sahasrara (crown chakra). Only a true yogi, one who has complete knowledge of the six chakras and their transcendence (Shatchakra Bhedan), can draw the string and break the bow. The journey of the seeker, symbolized as Shiva, begins from the Muladhara and follows a path through the Ajna Chakra (third eye) until the union with Shakti (power). This union of Shiva and Shakti represents the ultimate realization and spiritual union. Ram, as a yogi, completed this journey using the wisdom of yog, overcoming impurities and obstacles (Tadaka, Subahu, Maricha) to reach the Sahasrara. In yogic texts, it is said that in the Sahasrara a Thousand-petaled Lotus blooms, which signifies the full awakening of consciousness. It is here, in the “garden of the thousand-petaled lotus,” that Shiva (Ram) first meets his power (Shakti), symbolized by Sita. This union of Shiva and Shakti is the essence of creation and spiritual fulfillment.

The story of the Ram-Sita marriage through the Dhanush Yajna represents the union of Shiva and Shakti. Only a true yogi, one with the power of yog, can even move the bow, let alone break it. Physical strength, wealth, and numbers hold no significance without the inner strength of yog. This is reflected in the words of Goswami Tulsidas, who wrote: “Bhup sahasadas ekahin bara, lage uthavahiin tarai na tara” Meaning, even if there are thousands of kings, without the right power or understanding, none can move the bow. This verse emphasizes that without the true strength of yog, external power and wealth are of no use.

King Dashrath is symbolized as an unstable yogi. The path of yog is one of intense discipline, and even a slight lapse in focus can lead the practitioner away from their goal, disrupting their progress and causing confusion. In Dashrath’s life, an imbalance towards his three queens—Kausalya, Sumitra, and Kaikeyi—leads him from being Shasak Dashrath (the ruler) to Shasit Dashrath (the ruled). This shift results in unfulfilled desires, opposition in circumstances, sorrow, regret, and eventually, a painful death. The same can be said about a practitioner on the path of yog: a lapse in concentration or failure to complete the journey to Sahasrara (the crown chakra) leads to missing the realization of truth (Tattva Sakshatkar). The practitioner’s desires and aspirations remain unfulfilled, much like Dashrath’s unachieved goals. The role of Ram (the yogi) is to focus on the practice of yog, which progresses through four key stages: Buddhi (intellect), Chitta (mind), Manas (consciousness), and Ahankar (ego). The ultimate aim of yog is the establishment of righteousness (Dharma), order (Vidhi), and humanity in the world. The forest represents a place where humanity is eroding, where principles and order have collapsed. The exile of Ram (Ram Vanvas) signifies this symbolic journey into the wilderness, where the loss of righteousness (Dharma) must be confronted. Kausalya, in her wisdom, expresses her belief in the righteousness of Ram’s exile: “Jo Pitu Maatu Kaheu Ban Jaana, To Kaanaan Shat Avadh Samaana”, meaning if parents command, the child must obey, and thus the wilderness becomes as sacred as Ayodhya. This reflects the understanding that wherever Dharma (represented by Ram) exists, that is where Ayodhya is, and that is where good governance and righteous rule are found.

The First Step: Buddhi (Intellect) The world of Buddhi is full of dualities, contradictions, and debates. Where there is Buddhi, there is also conflict and argument. However, once one transcends these dualities and the conflicts of reasoning, achieving mental and social peace, that state is Ayodhya. Therefore, the Ram Leela in the Ayodhya Kanda (the Ayodhya episode) is a divine play of intellect, where Ram, as an embodiment of pure intellect, shows how to transcend worldly conflicts and arrive at a state of harmony and order. In essence, the journey of King Dasharath and Ram symbolizes the process of spiritual awakening: overcoming internal conflict, fulfilling one’s duties, and ultimately achieving harmony with the truth of existence.

The Second Step: Chitta (Consciousness): The Chitta is the storehouse of memories and impressions. In the Ram Katha, this is represented by Chitrakoot, where the Chitta becomes still and stable. Chitrakoot is the place where the mind is freed from the turbulence of past memories, where the Chitta reaches a state of peace and equilibrium. In Chitrakoot, the various Ram Leelas (divine plays) are the expressions of the Chitta—its movements, its waves of emotions, its transformations. The play of the mind, with its ups and downs, the arising and dissolving of thoughts and feelings, is symbolized here. The primary theme in Chitrakoot is the fluctuation of emotions, the continual rise and fall of mental states. The Chitta undergoes five stages: Kshiptam – Restless or scattered mind, Muddham – Ignorant or dull mind, Vikshiptam – Distracted or disturbed mind, Ekagram – Focused or concentrated mind and Niruddham – Completely controlled or suppressed mind. This progression signifies that the mind must evolve from its scattered, distracted, and restless state into one of concentration, where there is no disturbance, and no further decisions or distractions arise. The ultimate stage is when the Chitta dissolves, meaning the cessation of all mental activity and the achievement of perfect stillness. Thus, the Chitrakoot episode in the Ram Katha is a profound metaphor for this mental journey, where the seeker (symbolized by Ram) experiences and overcomes the fluctuations of the mind, moving towards a state of complete inner peace and control.

The Third Step: Mental World (Manas): The Manas (mind) is extremely restless, and it is here that desires continuously surge, making it difficult to distinguish between what is appropriate and inappropriate. The solutions derived from the intellectual world seem temporary, and nothing appears to make sense. What happens is often not visible, and what is visible lacks truth. The state is akin to a mirage, where even the impossible, like the golden deer (Kanchan Mrig), starts appearing real. The intellect becomes deluded in this state. In this mental world, the mind is symbolized by Panchavati—a place of collective desires and impulses. Within Panchavati, Surpanakha (representing desire) awakens the mind to its cravings and emotions. The Ram Leelas that occur in Panchavati are a reflection of the mental world, where the battle between control and indulgence takes place. The challenge here is to remain conscious and disciplined in the midst of this mental turbulence. If the mind is not controlled, one risks losing everything, much like Vishwamitra’s tapasya being lost, Surpanakha’s disfigurement (symbolizing a loss of boundaries or self-discipline), and even the loss of Ram’s strength (Sita). The mind must be restrained, as failure to do so leads to a loss of direction and purpose, allowing the chaos of unfulfilled desires to govern. This third stage underscores the importance of mental discipline in the spiritual journey. Just as Ram must deal with the mental distractions represented by Panchavati, a seeker must control the Manas to achieve true spiritual success.
